There are exactly three categories of place that can sell you a real Machu Picchu ticket: the Ministry of Culture's own portal, an authorized reseller (like us at machupicchu.world), and a handful of licensed travel agencies in Cusco. The Ministry adjusted ticket prices on 1 May 2026: **+S/. 11 for foreign adults**, +S/. 5 for Peruvians and Andean Community citizens. Most travel blogs still show the pre-May numbers. Here's the current 2026 face value at the government portal (soles), plus what you'll actually pay through us (USD, includes service).
- Circuit 2 (Classic / Lower Terrace) — adult foreigner: Ministry price: S/. 152 (post-May 2026). Our price: $62 USD. Children 8–17: $39 USD.
- Circuit 1A Machu Picchu Mountain / Circuit 3A Huayna Picchu — adult foreigner: Ministry price: S/. 200 (post-May 2026). Our price: $78 USD. Children (Mountain only, 8–17): $57 USD. Huayna Picchu is 18+ so no child rate.
- Circuit 3B Premium (with guide, flexible entry): Ministry price bundled with a licensed guide. Our price: $245 USD.
- Peruvian and Andean Community rates: Roughly half the foreigner rate. Only available at the official portal — an authorized reseller can't sell you the Peruvian rate. If you hold a DNI or valid CAN document, buy directly from the Ministry.

Which circuit to pick BEFORE you click buy

- Booking inside 6 weeks / need flexibility: Circuit 3B Premium ($245) — flexible 6 AM–3 PM entry window and a licensed guide included. Usually available when standard tickets are sold out.
When to book — the 2026 release calendar
Book Huayna Picchu 3–4 months ahead in peak season, Machu Picchu Mountain 3–6 weeks, and Circuit 2 two to four weeks ahead. Off-season, most standard circuits are available within the same week. The Ministry releases dates on a rolling calendar roughly 4–6 months forward.

There's no fixed "tickets drop at midnight on the first" moment — new dates simply become available as the window rolls forward. What matters is how far ahead each circuit sells out, not when a batch is released.
- Huayna Picchu (Circuit 3A): Book 3–4 months ahead in peak season (Jun–Sep). 6–8 weeks off-season. Sells out weekends first.
- Machu Picchu Mountain (Circuit 1A): Book 3–6 weeks ahead in peak season. Often available 1–2 weeks out off-season.
- Circuit 2 (Classic / Lower Terrace): Book 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season. Often available same-week off-season. Circuit 2A specifically is the most popular and sells out first among Circuit-2 sub-routes.
- Circuit 1B, 3B Royalty: Usually 1–2 weeks even in peak season. These are the fallback circuits when the peaks are gone.
- Seasonal circuits (1C Sun Gate, 1D Inca Bridge, 3C Grand Cavern, 3D Huchuy Picchu): Sold only June–October. When the June opening window arrives, book within the first week if you want a July slot.
What to do if your date is sold out
If your date is sold out: try Circuit 3B Premium (the ticket reserved for last-minute demand), refresh the portal at 8 AM and 8 PM Lima time when cancellations release, buy in person at the Centro Cultural de Aguas Calientes up to 3 days ahead, or shift your visit by one or two weekdays.
Assuming you can't move your travel dates, here are the real options — in order of realistic success rate.
- Try Circuit 3B Premium: It's the ticket the Ministry reserves for last-minute demand. Almost always available when standard circuits are sold out. Costs $245 USD but includes a licensed guide and a wide 6 AM–3 PM entry window. Not a scam — this is by design.
- Refresh at 8 AM and 8 PM Peru time: The portal releases cancellations in two waves each day at roughly 08:00 and 20:00 Lima time. Set alarms. This works — we've seen sold-out weeks flip to available slots within seconds of the refresh. Have your credit card ready and your passenger data pasted into notes; every second counts.
- The new 3-day last-minute rule (from 7 May 2026): The Ministry authorized the Centro Cultural de Aguas Calientes to sell in-person tickets up to 3 days in advance (extended from same-day / next-day). You need to physically be in Aguas Calientes. Small daily quota, first-come first-served, usually formed in a queue at 05:00 AM the day of. Real, works often, but requires you already being at the doorstep.
- Add a licensed guide-tour package: Cusco travel agencies sometimes have pre-purchased blocks of tickets bundled with guided tours. More expensive per person than DIY, but availability can exist even on sold-out days.
- Shift by 1–2 days: The single biggest unlock. Wednesday and Thursday slots survive when Saturday is gone. If you have ANY schedule flexibility, use it before you try the tricks above.
How to spot fake tickets and shady resellers
A real Machu Picchu ticket comes from only three places: the Ministry of Culture itself, an authorized reseller, or a licensed Cusco agency. Anyone selling "sold-out" dates over WhatsApp or Instagram, or offering a "VIP fast pass", is running a scam — rangers turn away holders of fake QRs every day.
The Machu Picchu ticket-scam economy is real. Rangers turn away real people every day who paid for fake QRs. Here are the red flags — save this list.
- Prices below face value: No legitimate seller can price below the Ministry rate — the Ministry sells to authorized resellers at face value. If someone offers Circuit 2 for $40 USD, it's a fake ticket that will be refused at the gate.
- "Guaranteed availability" on sold-out dates: Nobody can guarantee a sold-out slot. When Huayna Picchu shows sold out in the official system, it IS sold out. Anyone promising "we have connections" is running a scam.
- WhatsApp-only, no company info: Legitimate operators have a website, a physical address, a phone, tax registration (RUC), and reviews on Tripadvisor / Google. If your only channel is a WhatsApp number, don't send money.
- Payment by direct bank transfer to a personal account: Legit resellers use processors (Izipay, Culqi, Stripe) with buyer protection. Direct transfer to a personal account = no recourse when things go wrong.
- The QR doesn't verify against the Ministry system: You can verify any Machu Picchu QR by presenting it at any DDC-Cusco office. If a seller resists this, walk away. Real tickets scan against the Ministry's DDC-Cusco database.
After you buy — what to bring on entry day
- The QR ticket (offline): Save the PDF/PNG to your phone AND print a paper backup. There's no cell signal at the Machu Picchu entrance gate.
- The physical passport / DNI: The document you used when buying. NOT a photocopy, NOT a photo — the physical original. The name and number must match the ticket exactly. This is one of the most common reasons rangers deny entry.
- Bag under 25L, no big items: Bigger bags need to be checked at the entrance lockers (small fee). No tripods, no drones, no flags, no umbrellas over 40cm (in the current 2026 rules — see our rules guide).
- Water in a reusable bottle: Single-use plastic is banned. Bring a metal or reusable bottle — there are refill stations.

Frequent questions about buying Machu Picchu tickets
Is buying through machupicchu.world the same as buying directly from the Ministry?
The ticket is exactly the same — the same Ministry-of-Culture-issued QR, the same admission rights, the same rules at the gate. What differs: our checkout is in English + Spanish, charged in USD, processed through Izipay (fewer foreign-card declines), and completed in ~90 seconds vs the 20–40 min the official portal takes. How long is a Machu Picchu ticket valid?
For the specific date and entry-time window you bought — nothing else. You can request a date change up to 24 hours before your entry (subject to availability), but you cannot change the circuit. Once the date passes, the ticket is void.
Do I need to buy separately for children?
Yes. Every visitor over 3 years old needs their own ticket. Children 8–17 get a reduced rate on most circuits (about 30% off the adult price). Under-8s enter free but still need to be manifested — bring the birth certificate or passport.
Can I buy Peruvian rates if I'm a foreigner living in Peru?
No. The Peruvian rate is tied to holding a DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad). Foreign residents with a Carnet de Extranjería (CE) pay the foreigner rate. Andean Community citizens (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador) pay the reduced Community rate at the official portal only.
What if my payment goes through but I don't get the QR?
On the official portal: check spam, then contact the Ministry's support form — response takes 1–3 business days in Spanish.
