Machu Picchu official website: which one is the real one, and what we are

Type "Machu Picchu official website" and the first page is a mix of the government, agencies, resellers and a few outright scams, all using the word official. This page tells you which site actually belongs to the Peruvian state, how to recognize it in five seconds, and where a site like ours fits. We would rather you buy from the Ministry with clear eyes than from us by confusion.

The official Machu Picchu website is the Ministry of Culture's

Every Machu Picchu entrance ticket is issued by Peru's Ministry of Culture through its Cusco office (DDC-Cusco). The sanctuary's institutional site is machupicchu.gob.pe, and the Ministry's online ticket platform is reached from the government portal at gob.pe/mcultura. That is the only "official website" in the strict sense: the one that issues the QR. Everyone else, including us, sells you that same ticket with a service layered on top.

To be completely clear: machupicchu.world is not the Peruvian government. We are a Peru-registered company that acts as an authorized reseller. If you were looking for the state's own portal, the links above are it.

How to recognize the official site in five seconds

  • The domain ends in .gob.pe: Peruvian government sites live under gob.pe. A .com, .world, .travel or .pe without "gob" is a private company, however official its logo looks.
  • It is in Spanish and charges in soles: The Ministry's portal has no English interface and prices are in Peruvian soles at face value, with no service fee.
  • It sells the Peruvian and Andean Community rates: Only the Ministry can sell the reduced rate for DNI holders and citizens of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador. No reseller offers it.
  • It never contacts you on WhatsApp or Instagram: The state does not sell tickets through messaging apps or social accounts. Anyone doing so while claiming to be official is not.

What the official site does well, and where it hurts

If you read Spanish, hold a card that behaves on Peruvian websites and have 20 to 40 minutes, the Ministry's portal is the cheapest way to get a ticket, full stop. Where it hurts is everything around the purchase: the interface is Spanish only, a fair share of foreign cards are declined without a clear reason, availability is not always easy to read, and support is a web form answered in Spanish within one to three business days. In high season, that lag is the difference between a ticket and a sold-out date.

What an authorized reseller adds, and what it cannot

A reseller like machupicchu.world buys the identical Ministry ticket in your name and charges a service fee for the parts the state does not do for a foreign visitor: a checkout in English, Spanish, Portuguese or Japanese; payment in US dollars by card or PayPal; live availability for all eleven circuits on one calendar; and a person in Cusco on WhatsApp seven days a week if a name is misspelled or a date needs to move. After you pay, your reservation opens a personal itinerary page where every traveler in the group sees the same plan and can add the train and the Aguas Calientes bus without typing their details again.

What no reseller can do: sell below the Ministry's face value, sell the Peruvian or Andean Community rate, "find" a slot the Ministry shows as sold out, or change the circuit on an issued ticket. Standard circuits cost $62 per adult with us, the mountain climbs $78, Circuit 3B Premium $245, plus a 5% service fee shown as its own line before you pay. The full breakdown is in our 2026 price guide.

How to check any seller, including us

  • Price at or above face value: The Ministry sells to resellers at face value, so nobody legitimate can undercut it. Circuit 2 for $40 is a fake QR that will be refused at the gate.
  • A registered company, not just a phone number: Website, physical address, Peruvian tax registration (RUC) and a card processor with buyer protection. Ours are on the contact page.
  • No "guaranteed" sold-out dates: When the Ministry's system shows a circuit sold out, it is sold out. The honest alternatives are in what to do when Machu Picchu is sold out.
  • The QR verifies against the Ministry: Any real ticket can be verified at a DDC-Cusco office. A seller who resists that is telling you something.
Sponsored results that copy the Ministry's look, Instagram accounts "with contacts", WhatsApp brokers and "VIP fast passes" are the four scams we hear about most on our own support line. The full red-flag list is in how to buy Machu Picchu tickets.

Frequent questions about the official Machu Picchu website

Is machupicchu.world the official Machu Picchu website?

No. The official site belongs to Peru's Ministry of Culture and lives under gob.pe. machupicchu.world is a Peru-registered authorized reseller: we buy the same Ministry-issued ticket on your behalf and add an English checkout, USD payment, live availability and WhatsApp support.

Is a ticket bought from a reseller valid at the gate?

Yes, if the reseller is legitimate. There is only one kind of Machu Picchu ticket, issued by the Ministry with your name on it. Rangers scan the QR against the Ministry's database and check it against your original passport; where you bought it makes no difference.

Why does the official site decline my card?

Peruvian portals reject a fair share of foreign cards for fraud-prevention reasons, often without a clear message. Trying another card, calling your bank to pre-authorize a purchase in Peru, or using a reseller that processes in US dollars are the usual fixes.

Can I get the Peruvian rate through a reseller?

No. The reduced rate for Peruvian DNI holders and Andean Community citizens is sold only on the Ministry's own portal. If you qualify, buy there.
