Machu Picchu tickets sold out for your dates? Here is what actually works

Every high-season week we get the same message: "there are no tickets, what do I do?" The honest answer is that there are usually tickets — just not the one you searched for. This is the order in which we work through it with travelers on WhatsApp, from the two-minute fixes to the plan of last resort: the in-person sale in Machupicchu Pueblo, which changed its rules in August 2026 and deserves its own explanation.

Travelling in the next 30 days and your date is sold out? The 2-Day Tour gets you in →

1. Check the sister route on the same date

Sold-out messages are per route, not per day. Circuit 2A is the one most people search for; Circuit 2B walks the same twelve landmarks inside the city for the same price and often has times left. If you only want the view, Circuit 1B visits both panoramic platforms. If you want to be inside the walls with the least walking, Circuit 3B covers the lower royal sector. Each ticket page has a circuit switcher at the top so you can check them without leaving the calendar.

2. Jump to the first available date

When an entire month has no availability at the official source, our calendar says so and shows a button that jumps straight to the first date that does. It saves the click-through-thirty-days routine and tells you immediately whether moving your visit by two days, or by two weeks, would solve it. For the big picture, the availability board shows every route for the next six months, recounted every hour.

3. The 2-Day Tour: we buy the entrance with you in the Pueblo

If your travel dates cannot move, this is the way in. On the 2-Day Tour we pick you up in Cusco, take you to Machupicchu Pueblo by train, register you in person at the Ministry's office and hand you your Circuit 2 entrance; the next day you visit with a licensed guide. It exists because that in-person quota is the only inventory left once the website is empty. It is not cheap, and the entry day is assigned by the Ministry, not by us — the whole of section 5 explains exactly what that means before you decide.

4. Circuit 3B Premium: guided, flexible entry

On dates when the standard time slots are gone, the 3B Premium ticket is often still open. It walks the lower royal sector of the city with a licensed bilingual guide and lets you enter at any time between 6 AM and 3 PM instead of a fixed slot. It costs $245 per adult, so it is the option for a trip that cannot move, not a bargain.

5. The in-person sale in Machupicchu Pueblo: how it really works in 2026

The Ministry of Culture keeps a daily quota of up to 1,000 tickets that are only sold in person, in Machupicchu Pueblo, for a later date. You buy it yourself, with your original passport and in cash, and you take the circuit that is left. Since August 2026, when the next day sells out the office sells the day after, so the entry you get may be two or three days out: plan two nights in the Pueblo. Our guide to buying tickets in person in Aguas Calientes explains how it works step by step, with a real case from August.

What to expect for the rest of 2026

Updated 15 October 2026. The Ministry of Culture ended unpaid reservations on 6 October and cancelled the ones agencies were using to block tickets; more than 90,000 came back on sale on 8 October. A week later our hourly recount shows what that left: Circuit 2 is sold out again for all of November and down to seven days in December, while Machu Picchu Mountain (1A) and the Upper Terraces (1B) still have seats most days. January to March 2027 are wide open. The full timeline and the per-circuit numbers are in the new ticket system explained. Our advice did not change: if you can buy any route in advance, do it; it removes the worst case, which is missing Machu Picchu altogether.

What does not work

  • Making the in-person sale your plan A: It is a real channel, but since August 2026 the date you get is whatever the cascade leaves. Use it when you are already committed to being in the Pueblo, with spare nights, not instead of booking ahead.
  • Buying a ticket for a different date and "trying at the gate": The ticket fixes date and entry time and is checked against your passport. It will not be accepted on another day.
  • Buying someone else's ticket: Tickets are nominative and non-transferable. A ticket with another name is worthless at the gate.
  • Waiting for prices to drop: They do not. Prices are fixed; only availability changes, and it only gets worse as the date approaches.

How far ahead do tickets sell out?

It depends on the route and the month. Huayna Picchu (3A) and Circuit 2A go first, months ahead in June–August. The lower-city and platform routes hold availability much closer to the date. The calendar on each ticket page is the only reliable answer for a specific day.

Can I buy a ticket at the Machu Picchu gate?

No. There is no ticket office at the entrance to the sanctuary. The only in-person channel is the Ministry's sale in Machupicchu Pueblo, for a later date.

Does the in-person sale only sell tickets for the next day?

Not anymore. Since August 2026, according to our Cusco operator, when the next day is sold out they sell the day after, and if that is gone too, the day after that. So the ticket you buy today may be for two or three days from now. The rule can change again without notice.

Can someone buy the in-person ticket for me?

The ticket is issued in your name and checked against your passport at the gate.

Did the October 2026 reform make tickets easier to get?

For 2027, yes: with unpaid reservations gone, nobody can block seats, and January to March 2027 are wide open. For the rest of 2026, only briefly: the 90,000 released tickets were bought within days, and Circuit 2 is sold out again for November. The safest move in any month is still to buy online in advance, even if the only route left is not your first choice.

Can you put me on a waitlist and tell me if a spot frees up?

No, and we would rather say so. The daily quota belongs to the Ministry: when a date sells out at the official source, nobody outside the Ministry can release seats for it. Anyone promising to watch for cancellations is promising something they do not control. What we can do for a date that cannot move is take you to the in-person sale with the 2-Day Tour.

Start with the calendar, not the panic

Open the ticket you want, look at the month, and use the circuit switcher and the first-available-date button. If your dates cannot move at all, the calendar sends you to the 2-Day Tour, which buys your entrance at the in-person sale in the Pueblo.
