What Circuit 1 covers, and what it leaves out
The Ministry of Culture calls Circuit 1 the panoramic circuit. All four of its routes enter through the upper sector, reach the viewing platforms above the terraces, the spot the Guard's House photo is taken from, and then branch off. None of them cross into the urban sector to walk the Temple of the Sun, the Intiwatana or the Temple of the Condor from inside; that is Circuit 2, and in part Circuit 3. Circuit 1 trades the interior for altitude, trails and space.

Route 1A: Machu Picchu Mountain
The hardest hike the sanctuary sells. From the platforms, a stone stairway climbs to the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain at 3,082 m, with 360-degree views over the Andes and the Urubamba valley and far fewer people than the main routes. Up to 7 hours inside, sold year-round, and usually the last mountain ticket to sell out, which makes it the fallback when Huayna Picchu is gone.

Route 1B: Upper Terraces
The shortest official route and the one to book if the photo is the point. It reaches the Guard's House viewpoint, the postcard angle, and the terraces around it, in a maximum stay of 2 h 30 with almost no climbing. It fits a half-day itinerary and travelers with limited mobility, and in high season it often still has times when Circuit 2A is sold out.

Route 1C: Sun Gate (Intipunku)
The trail to Intipunku, the original Inca entrance at 2,745 m, the point where Inca Trail trekkers get their first sight of the city. You walk it in reverse from the platforms and back, up to 4 hours, moderate effort. Sold only from June to October.

Route 1D: Inca Bridge
A short, mostly flat trail to the Inca Bridge, a removable wooden span over a 600 m cliff that once defended the citadel. Up to 3 hours, easy, and one of the least crowded photo spots in the sanctuary. Seasonal, June to October.

Who should book Circuit 1
- You want the classic photo with the least walking: Route 1B. It is the only route where the viewpoint is the whole point, in 2 h 30.
- You want a serious hike and Huayna Picchu is sold out: Route 1A. Higher than Huayna Picchu, longer, and with far more availability.
- You are visiting between June and October and want something different: Routes 1C and 1D exist only in that window. The Sun Gate for the arrival view, the Inca Bridge for the quiet.
- You are coming back for a second visit: Any Circuit 1 route. You already walked the temples; this time buy the view.
Booking notes for Circuit 1
- Seasonality: 1A and 1B all year; 1C and 1D from June to October. Outside that window the seasonal routes simply do not appear on the calendar.
- How far ahead: Machu Picchu Mountain usually books 3 to 6 weeks ahead in high season and often 1 to 2 weeks out off-season. 1B is a reliable fallback even close to the date.
- Entry time and the bus: Entry is an hourly window. For 1A, take the earliest bus you can: the climb is in full sun by late morning. The bus from Aguas Calientes is $24 round trip, paid on site.
- What is included: The Ministry entrance for that route, the QR by email and free rescheduling up to 24 hours before, subject to availability. A licensed guide can be added at checkout for $35 per person.

Does Circuit 1 include the classic Machu Picchu photo?
Yes. All four Circuit 1 routes reach the viewing platforms above the terraces, which is where the postcard photo is taken. Route 1B is the shortest way to that spot.
Does Circuit 1 walk through the temples?
No. Circuit 1 stays on the platforms and the trails. The Temple of the Sun, the Intiwatana and the Temple of the Condor are walked from inside on Circuit 2; the lower royal sector on Circuit 3.
How much does a Circuit 1 ticket cost?
Routes 1B, 1C and 1D cost $62 per adult and $39 per child aged 8 to 17. Route 1A Machu Picchu Mountain costs $78 per adult and $57 per child. A 5% service fee is added at checkout.
Which Circuit 1 routes are seasonal?
