The Guardian's House at Machu Picchu: where the classic photo is taken, and which ticket gets you there

Every picture of Machu Picchu you have ever seen was taken from roughly the same place: the platforms around a small stone hut known as the Guardian's House. Since the Ministry split the sanctuary into one-way circuits, whether you stand there depends on the ticket you buy.

What the Guardian's House is

It is a small stone building with a thatched roof on the high ground above the agricultural terraces, at the edge of the city. From the platforms around it the whole site lines up in one frame: the terraces below, the urban sector beyond and Huayna Picchu behind it. That frame is the postcard, and it is why almost every visitor wants to stand in this corner of the sanctuary.

Which tickets reach it

  • Circuit 1 — all four routes reach the platforms: The Ministry calls Circuit 1 the panoramic circuit. Routes 1A (Machu Picchu Mountain), 1B (Upper Terraces), 1C (Sun Gate) and 1D (Inca Bridge) all enter through the upper sector and reach the platforms the Guardian's House photo is taken from, then branch off to their own trail.
  • Route 1B — the shortest way to the photo: Route 1B is the one to book if the photo is the point: the upper terraces around the Guardian's House, up to 2 h 30, almost no climbing, $62. It sells entries every hour until 3 PM and in high season often still has times when 2A is gone.
  • Circuit 2A — the postcard angle from just below: Route 2A opens at the Lower Platform viewpoint, below the Guardian's House: the same postcard angle from slightly lower, before you walk the whole city. If you want the view and the temples in one ticket, this is it.
  • Circuit 2B — the view from the lower terrace: Route 2B enters along the lower terrace instead of climbing to the platform. You still see the panorama, from a lower angle.
  • Circuit 3 — not this one: Routes 3A to 3D cover the lower part of the city and its mountains. None of them reaches the upper platforms.

1B or 2A: choosing between the view and the city

Circuits are one-way and you cannot switch once inside. 1B gives you the Guardian's House itself and its terraces, but not the temples of the urban sector. 2A gives you the postcard angle from the Lower Platform and then the twelve landmarks of the city, from the Temple of the Sun to the Sacred Rock. If you can only visit once and want both, book 2A; if the photo from the top is the whole reason for the trip, or 2A is sold out, book 1B.

Can I get the classic photo with Circuit 2?

Yes, from below. 2A opens at the Lower Platform viewpoint with the postcard angle, and 2B sees the panorama from the lower terrace. Standing at the Guardian's House itself is Circuit 1.

Which is the easiest route to the Guardian's House?

Route 1B: the shortest official route, up to 2 h 30, with almost no climbing.

Does Machu Picchu Mountain (1A) pass the Guardian's House?

Yes. 1A is a Circuit 1 route: it reaches the upper platforms before the climb to the summit.
