Machu Picchu in the afternoon: which routes you can enter after noon, and when it is the better choice

Most visitors fight for the 6 and 7 AM entries. The afternoon is the part of the calendar people forget, and on the busiest dates it is often the only part left. But only four of the eleven routes sell afternoon slots, and the way back to Cusco changes with them.

The four routes with afternoon entries

In our availability for the rest of 2026, these routes have an entry every hour from 6 AM to 3 PM. The 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM and 3 PM slots are the afternoon ones; 3 PM is the last entry of the day.

  • Circuit 2A — the postcard and the full city: Route 2A starts at the platform where the classic photo is taken and then walks the whole Inca city, up to 2 h 30. The most requested route, mornings first.
  • Circuit 2B — the same city from the lower terrace: Route 2B walks the same twelve landmarks, entering along the lower terrace. In the afternoon it is usually the easiest of the four to find free.
  • Circuit 1B — the view, short: Route 1B goes to the upper terraces and the Guard's House viewpoint and back, up to 2 h 30, with almost no climbing.
  • Circuit 3B — the lower royal sector: Route 3B covers the lower part of the city, with the royal temples, up to 2 h 30. It does not reach the panoramic platforms.

The routes that are morning only

The mountains and the trails start early and have no afternoon entries: Machu Picchu Mountain (1A) at 7 and 9 AM, Huayna Picchu (3A) at 7 and 10 AM, Gran Caverna (3C) at 8 and 9 AM, Huchuypicchu (3D) at 9 and 11 AM, and the Sun Gate (1C) and Inca Bridge (1D) trails from 7 to 10 AM. If one of these is the point of your trip, your visit is a morning visit.

When the afternoon is the better choice

  • When the morning is sold out: On peak dates the early slots of 2A go first. The same route at 2 or 3 PM, or 2B, is often still there. A date you can keep beats a time slot you wanted.
  • When you arrive the same day: If you take the morning train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, a midday or afternoon entry leaves time for the bus up without rushing.
  • When you want the morning for something else: A morning hike on Putucusi, a rest day after the Inca Trail or simply a late breakfast: the afternoon frees the start of the day.
Plan the way back before you book an afternoon slot. With a 3 PM entry and up to 2 h 30 inside, you are back in Aguas Calientes in the early evening: book a late train or a night in town. Our 2-Day Tour already includes the night.
