Who counts as a student
For the ticket, a student is a traveler aged 18 to 24 on the day of the visit who is enrolled in higher education — a university or a technical school — and carries a valid student card. The age limit is what trips people up: a 26-year-old doctoral student with a valid card still pays the adult fare, and a 17-year-old pays the child fare, which is the same amount.
What the student fare costs on each route
- Standard routes — $39 instead of $62: Circuit 2A, 2B, 1B, 1C, 1D, 3B Royalty and 3D. Same student price on all of them, whether the route lasts 2 h 30 or 4 h.
- Mountain routes — a student fare below the $78 adult fare: Machu Picchu Mountain (1A) is $57 for students, and Huayna Picchu (3A) has its own student fare too. The ticket page shows the exact amount next to the adult price before you pay.
- Peru and Andean Community — $25 on the standard routes: If you are Peruvian, a foreign resident of Peru or a citizen of Bolivia, Colombia or Ecuador, the student fare drops to $25 on the standard routes. The rules are in Machu Picchu tickets for Peruvians and the Andean Community.
All prices are per person in US dollars. At checkout we add a 5% service fee, shown as its own line before you pay: a $39 student ticket comes to $40.95.
What you need at the gate
Every ticket is issued in the visitor's name and checked against their passport at the entrance. A student ticket is checked twice: the passport for the name and age, and the student card for the fare. Carry the physical card, make sure it shows that it is valid on the date of your visit, and keep it with your passport, not in the luggage you left at the hotel.
How to book it
On any ticket page, pick the date and entry time, then set the number of travelers by fare: adult, student, child. Each student needs their own name and passport number at checkout, exactly as on the passport. Groups can mix fares in one booking — two adults and two students, for example, go into the same payment.

Is an ISIC or international student card enough?
What the fare requires is proof that you are a student in higher education on the day of the visit. Your own university or institute card is the safest document to carry; if you also have an international card, bring both.
I am 25 and still a student. Can I use the student fare?
No. The student fare is for travelers aged 18 to 24 on the day of the visit. From 25 you pay the adult fare.
Are school students under 18 eligible?
Under 18 you do not need the student fare: you travel on the child fare (ages 3 to 17), which costs the same, and no student card is needed. See [Machu Picchu tickets for children](/blog/machu-picchu-tickets-for-children).
Does the student discount apply to the bus or the guide?
No. The student fare is the entrance ticket only. The bus from Aguas Calientes is paid on site and the licensed guide, if you add one, is priced per person.
