The Temple of the Moon: the cave shrine behind Huayna Picchu

Most visitors never see it, because it is on the back side of the mountain that stands over the city. The Temple of the Moon rewards the longest walk in the sanctuary with some of its finest stonework. Here is the ticket and what the day looks like.

The ticket: route 3C

Route 3C starts at the Temple of the Sun viewpoint, crosses the lower city to the Sacred Rock and then takes the trail that drops down the far side of Huayna Picchu to the Great Cavern. It is the longest walk of all the routes, which is why the ticket allows up to 7 hours inside. It costs $78 per adult, with entries at 8 and 9 AM.

Route 3C does not include the climb to the summit of Huayna Picchu; that is route 3A. 3C goes around the back of the mountain to the cave.
