The Intihuatana at Machu Picchu: only two routes, and better in the morning

The Intihuatana sits at the top of the urban sector, a carved stone that has been called the 'hitching post of the sun'. It is also one of the most restricted spots of the visit. Here is which tickets reach it, and when.

Which tickets reach it

Only routes 2A and 2B include the Intiwatana Pyramid. Both walk the whole Inca city one way, up to 2 h 30, for $62. Route 2A starts at the Lower Platform viewpoint with the postcard angle; route 2B enters along the lower terrace and is often easier to book.

Access to the Intihuatana is often limited to the morning hours, roughly 7 to 10 AM. With an afternoon entry you may walk past it closed. If the stone matters to you, choose an early slot.

Does Circuit 3 go to the Intihuatana?

No. Circuit 3 covers the lower part of the city. The Intihuatana is only on routes 2A and 2B.
