How the weather changes the ticket to book

  • Rainy months and steep routes: Huayna Picchu and the Mountain climb on stone steps that get slippery when wet, and the trail can close on days of heavy rain. From November to March, a 2 h 30 route like 2A is the safer bet.
  • Dry months and the views: May to September gives the clearest views from the platforms and summits, and it is also when most people go. Book Huayna Picchu and the Mountain first.
  • February: The Inca Trail closes for maintenance all month; Machu Picchu itself stays open and you reach it by train.
Trains also run a rainy-season schedule from January to April: departures from Cusco become bus plus train. See trains to Machu Picchu from January to April.
