One day: one route from Cusco
With an early bus-and-train from Cusco you reach Machu Picchu Town around 8 or 9 AM, enter at 10 or 11 AM and take an afternoon train back. That fits one route of up to 2 h 30: 2A, 2B, 1B or 3B. The full timeline with real train times is in Machu Picchu in one day from Cusco.
Two days: a mountain, or two routes
- For Huayna Picchu, the Mountain or the Gran Caverna: Huayna Picchu allows up to 6 h inside, Machu Picchu Mountain and the Gran Caverna up to 7 h. Arrive in Aguas Calientes the day before and take an early entry, so the trains are never the limit.
- For two routes: Routes are one-way and each ticket is one route. The usual pair is the city on one day (2A) and a mountain or trail the other (3A, 1A or 1C Sun Gate).
- For a calmer trip: Even with one route, a night in Aguas Calientes turns a 16-hour day into two easy ones and lets you take an early entry.

Is one day enough for Machu Picchu?
Yes, for one route of up to 2 h 30 such as 2A. For Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain or two routes, plan two days with a night in Aguas Calientes.
Can I visit Machu Picchu twice with one ticket?
No. Each ticket is one entry on one route. A second visit needs a second ticket.
Should I sleep in Aguas Calientes?
If you want Huayna Picchu, the Mountain or an early entry, yes. For one 2 h 30 route, a day trip from Cusco works.
