Machu Picchu in one day from Cusco: the ticket and the entry time that work

Most of the day is transport, and the entry time on your ticket is the piece the rest of the day hangs on. Here is a timeline built on real train departures, and the tickets that fit inside it.

October 5, 2026 · machupicchu.world team

The timeline on a real date

These are Inca Rail's departures for 15 November 2026, from the same system our Mi Tour itinerary sells from. The Cusco departures are bus plus train: a bus to Ollantaytambo, then the train to Machu Picchu Town (Aguas Calientes). Times change by date, so check yours before booking.

  • 04:10 Cusco → 08:01 Machu Picchu Town: Then the bus up, about 25 minutes plus the queue. A 10 AM entry leaves room for both.
  • 10:00 – 12:30 inside: A 2 h 30 route, one way through the sanctuary.
  • Bus down and lunch in town: The 14:30 train back reached Cusco at 18:20 on our sample date.
  • Slower version: 04:30 from Cusco (arrives 08:48), 11 AM entry, then the 16:12 back, in Cusco at 20:20.
Your ticket has a fixed entry hour. The rules allow 30 minutes of tolerance in low season and 45 in high season; past that you do not enter and there is no refund. In high season the bus queue in Aguas Calientes alone can take 30 to 60 minutes, so do not book the first slot after your train arrives.

Which tickets fit in one day

  • Circuit 2A — the best fit: Route 2A opens at the postcard viewpoint and then walks the whole city: Temple of the Sun viewpoint, Intiwatana, Sacred Rock, Temple of the Condor. Up to 2 h 30, $62. It sells entries every hour until 3 PM.
  • 2B, 1B or 3B — if 2A is gone: 2B is the same city without the high platform; 1B is the view from the top terraces without the temples; 3B Royalty is the lower royal sector. All up to 2 h 30, all $62.
  • 1D or 1C — only with an early entry: 1D Inca Bridge allows up to 3 h and 1C Sun Gate up to 4 h, with entries from 7 to 10 AM. From Cusco that means the latest entry and the 16:12 train back.
  • Not in one day: Huayna Picchu (up to 6 h), Machu Picchu Mountain and the Gran Caverna (up to 7 h) are long climbs. Sleep in Aguas Calientes the night before.

Book the entrance first, then the train

Trains run several times a day; entrance tickets for a given date sell out first. Secure the entry time, then pick the trains around it. With us, you book the ticket and then add the Inca Rail train in Mi Tour with the live fare for your date. The bus up ($24 round trip) is bought in Aguas Calientes. More on every way to get there in how to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco.

Can you visit Machu Picchu in one day from Cusco?

Yes. Take an early bus-and-train from Cusco, enter at 10 or 11 AM on a 2 h 30 route, and take an afternoon train back. It is a long day: you leave around 4 AM and get back in the evening.

What entry time should I book for a day trip?

After a train that reaches Machu Picchu Town around 8 AM, book 10 AM; after one around 9 AM, book 11 AM. The bus up takes about 25 minutes and the queue can add 30 to 60 in high season.

Can I climb Huayna Picchu on a day trip?

It is not a good fit. Route 3A allows up to 6 hours inside, which does not leave time for the trains on the same day. Sleep in Aguas Calientes the night before.
