The day, step by step
- Very early start: About 3 hours by road to the trailhead in Pitumarca, so departures leave Cusco before dawn.
- The climb: About 1.5 to 2 hours up to 5,200 m. The slope is steady and the air is thin; horses can carry you part of the way.
- Back the same day: Down, then the drive back to Cusco in the afternoon.
When to go
May to October gives the clearest colors. From November to April snow can cover the stripes. The mountain gets more than 1,000 visitors a day in high season, so the earliest departures reach the top with fewer people.
An easier alternative: Palccoyo
Palccoyo, in the district of Checacupe, is another colored mountain at around 4,900 m with a shorter walk of about an hour. It suits travelers who want the colors with less effort.
